Note: Do not back up files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on.For example, do not back up files to a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs). To back up the entire drive, select the box to the left of your external hard drive. To select only specific files or folders for backup, click the drive, then browse the contents and select the items you want to. If you don't get this prompt, you can just go to the Start Menu, type 'backup' in the search box, and hit Backup and Restore. From there, click the 'Set Up Backup' button. Pick the external drive.
Attach your external drive to your device.
Open the Code42 app.
Go to Manage Files.
Code42 app version 6.8.3 and later: Click Manage Files.
Code42 app version 6.8.2 and earlier: Click Details > Manage Files.
Above the file list, click your device name in the breadcrumb.

Click Save. The Code42 app begins backing up the files on your external drive.
What happens if I disconnect my drive?
Your backed up files are safe when the drive is disconnected as long as your version setting for deleted files is set to Never (the default setting). When you reconnect the drive, the Code42 app resumes backup from where it left off. If you reconnect the drive and the Code42 app doesn't recognize it immediately, it is likely because the drive letter or name changed. See the troubleshooting tips below to correct the issue.
Disconnecting drives The Code42 app doesn’t distinguish between files that have been deleted from your device and those that are temporarily unavailable because a drive is disconnected. If you disconnect your external drive, we recommend configuring the Code42 app to neverremove deleted files from your backup archive.
Note: If your external drive isn't connected to your device when the Code42 app runs the file verification scan, it's possible your backup status will report 100%, even if there are additional files on the drive that need to be backed up. The next time the drive is connected, the Code42 app will detect the changes and adjust your backup status.
Replace a drive
To add a new drive to replace a drive that you no longer use, add the new drive to the file selection.
Once the new drive is selected, the data on the new drive is de-duplicated against what is stored in the archive. This process is entirely automatic and no action is required on your part. The old path may display as 'Missing' while the Code42 app performs a synchronization (file verification scan). Once the Code42 app displays that synchronization is complete in the progress bar, you can deselect the old drive's file path.

Best practices (Windows)
When you connect an external drive to a Windows device, the operating system automatically assigns the next available letter in the alphabet. If the letter changes when you reconnect a drive you've been using for backup, the Code42 app won't recognize the drive. Consequently, we recommend assigning a static drive letter to your external drive.
Troubleshooting tips
Code42 app reports drive as 'missing'
Teco split air conditioner manual. This issue occurs when the external drive is disconnected from the device or the letter or name assigned to the drive by your operating system changes. The Code42 app uses absolute paths when backing up. If the Code42 app cannot detect a drive at the specified location, such as when it is disconnected or when the name of a drive changes, it lists the drive as 'Missing'. You can correct the issue by reconnecting the drive or renaming the drive to match the original drive letter or name.
External drive stops backing up (Mac)
If an external drive stops backing up on a Mac, it is likely because the drive didn't unmount cleanly (for example, after a power outage, or disconnection without ejection). When this happens, the drive can leave behind a 'ghost' folder in /Volumes, even though the drive is no longer mounted. When the external drive re-mounts to your device, the 'ghost' folder name is already taken, so your device adds a “1” to the external drive's name. However, the Code42 app looks for a folder with the original name, and that folder belongs to a drive that appears to be no longer connected. Use our troubleshooting guide to diagnose and correct this issue.

Where is Time Machine on Mac?
Time Machine is a built-in app within macOS ever since OS X 10.5. To find it, click on the Apple logo on the top left corner of your screen, then select System Preferences.
Time Machine is the easiest way to back up Mac. And the app is created and recommended by Apple. Once you have a timely backup, it’s incredibly easy to restore all or part of your data in case of accidental deletion or a hard drive crash.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Backing up Mac to an External Hard Drive
Note: the screenshots below are taken based on an older macOS. If your Mac is running Mojave or Catalina, they will look slightly different but the process should be similar.
Step 1: Connect your external hard drive.
First, use the USB cable (or USB-C cable if you’re on the newest Mac model with Thunderbolt 3 ports) that comes with your external drive to connect that drive to your Mac.
Once the disk icon shows up on your desktop (if it doesn’t, open Finder > Preferences > General, and here make sure you’ve checked “External disks” to let them show on the desktop), move on to Step 2.
Note: if your external drive can’t show up on Mac or macOS hints the drive is not supported, you’ll have to re-format it to a Mac-compatible file system before continuing the following steps.
Step 2: Select the disk for backup.
How to make adobe a printer option. Now open Time Machine (I tell you how above) and select the disk you want to use. I have partitioned my Seagate drive into two new volumes, “Backup” and “Personal Use”, as you see from the screenshot. I chose “Backup”.
Step 3: Confirm backup (optional).
If you have used another disk for backup before, Time Machine will ask you whether you want to stop backing up to the previous disk and use the new one instead. It’s up to you. I selected “Replace”.
Step 4: Wait until the process is complete.
Now Time Machine will start to backup all your data. The progress bar gives you an estimate of how much time is left before the backup is complete. I found it a bit inaccurate: Initially, it said “About 5 hours remaining”, but it only took two hours to finish. It’s worth noting that the remaining time may vary from case to case depending on the write speed of your external hard drive.

Step 5: Eject your external drive and unplug it.
When the backup procedure is completed, don’t rush to disconnect your device as this could cause potential disk problems. Instead, go back to the main desktop, locate the volume that your external hard drive represents, right-click and select Eject. Then, you can safely unplug the device and put it in a safe place.

Like any other hardware device, an external hard drive will fail sooner or later. It’s best to make a copy of the data on your external drive — as they say, a “backup of your backups”!
One good option is to use cloud storage services like iDrive which I’ve been using and I really like the app because it’s super easy to use, and it also allows me to download Facebook photos automatically. Backblaze and Carbonite are also popular options in the market, though I am yet to give them a try.
